Kim Alpert founded Anthology of Style with a vision: to elevate vintage fashion through intentional curation, sustainability, and storytelling. An Introduction: The AoS Museum

This museum is a love letter to vintage fashion. One of our goals in creating this museum has been to give archival garments a permanent place of honor in the art world, affording them the same treatment as paintings and sculptures housed and glorified in famous museums around the world. Another driving purpose for us has been to create a nexus for the community of vintage designer fashion lovers—a place to gather, learn, and celebrate.

WHY WE BUILT A MUSEUM

From Founder and CEO Kim Alpert

Almost two years ago, after a jewelry show that was particularly packed with vintage treasures, I remember thinking that anyone new to these live-selling shows might end up believing it's normal and expected for some of the pieces we just sold to pop up on a random Tuesday night, even though they are ultra-rare and wouldn't be out of place in a museum.Cheekily, joking with myself, my next thought was, "Well, maybe I should build a museum then." As often is the case with ideas we're not ready for, I brushed it off and went on with my night. But while I was cleaning up, walking home, greeting my husband, and sitting down to dinner, some small part of me must have been turning that idea over and over, examining it, dusting off the joke and finding the seed of the dream inside, because the next time that thought crossed my mind, it no longer sounded so silly. "Well, what if I built a museum?"

The MET often has rotating exhibits featuring belts I've sourced and a few jackets I've had, so I know I'm not wrong about them being museum quality. Otherwise, the few and famous museums around the world that include fashion either tend to focus on the earliest examples from a house that are rare in a different way than what I'm drawn to, or they only include fashion on an exhibition level rather than as a permanent collection.I started doing a little research and, at least at the time, I wasn't able to find any major museum specifically dedicated to archival designer fashion. Some stores had showrooms, and some museums looked at a broader swath of fashion, but there wasn't anywhere in the US I could go to admire the vintage runway pieces that made my heart beat a little faster.

So, I became a person who had a dream to build a museum.I had never done anything like this before. I had never had a commercial lease, I had never hired a design team (boy did I get lucky with @jessicagerstendesign), I had never made a press kit, I had never tried to secretly recreate a 90s runway show, and I certainly never tried to build a museum while continuing to run a live-selling business. I'm lucky I have the best team on Earth and a very patient community.

I can’t wait to show you what we’ve built.

The First Curation: The 1995 Barbie Collection

For our opening curation, we chose ambitiously—our mission over the preceding two years was to reassemble the iconic Chanel 1995 Spring Summer Runway Collection. Not only is this collection one of our founder’s personal favorites, but it’s widely beloved by fashion connoisseurs and the movie-going masses alike.

Perhaps this is because the 1995 collection stands as a hallmark in fashion history, embodying Karl Lagerfeld's creative genius during his iconic tenure at the house. This collection blended timeless Chanel elegance with a fresh, youthful energy, reflecting Lagerfeld’s vision of marrying nostalgia with modernity. It reimagined Coco Chanel’s classic motifs for a new generation, drawing inspiration from the 1920's/30's while pushing the boundaries of traditional high fashion.

Key highlights of the collection included Chanel’s signature tweed suits, which were updated with cropped jackets and fitted skirts, infusing a playful, flirty edge into the brand’s heritage pieces. Bold elements such as micro skirts paired with bikini tops, sheer fabrics, and mesh overlays brought a daring, rebellious spirit to the runway.

Lagerfeld’s embrace of logomania was prominently featured, with the iconic double-C logo displayed across accessories like chunky chain belts and beaded necklaces, reinforcing Chanel's luxury status in a bold, modern way.

The color palette balanced soft pastels and classic neutrals with glamorous metallics and sequins, adding a playful yet luxurious feel to the collection. The star-studded runway presentation, featuring 90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, and Kate Moss, exuded a dynamic, fun atmosphere that echoed the youthful exuberance of the pieces.

The cultural impact of this collection was profound, marking a pivotal shift towards youth culture in high fashion. It bridged the gap between luxury fashion and street style, influencing the broader trends of the decade and cementing Chanel’s relevance among a younger audience. Pieces from this collection, especially the logo accessories and tweed jackets, have since become sought-after collector’s items and iconic fashion statements of the 90s.

Lagerfeld’s Spring/Summer 1995 collection, now affectionately referred to as the Barbie Collection, was a testament to his ability to balance tradition with innovation, injecting a sense of fun and boldness into Chanel’s timeless elegance. It not only left a lasting mark on the fashion industry but also resonated with pop culture, making it one of the most memorable and influential collections of the era.

The Second Curation: The 1992 SS/FW Collection

For our second museum curation, we turned our gaze to a pivotal year in the Chanel archive: 1992. This selection, drawn from both the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections, captures the full range of Karl Lagerfeld’s creative force at the height of his reinvention of the house. Rather than attempting a full reconstruction, we chose to curate a focused, intentional selection: pieces that exemplify the themes, textures, and attitudes that defined Chanel that year.

The 1992 collections were a study in contrast and control: opulence and restraint, heritage and reinvention. Spring/Summer evoked a vision of youthful elegance: delicate pastels, lightweight tweeds, and floral touches softened the sharp silhouettes. Lagerfeld infused the collection with romantic nostalgia while keeping the looks fresh and urbane. It was a season where femininity was powerful but never saccharine. Think body-skimming dresses, bold shoulders, and short hemlines paired with oversized pearl jewelry and chain belts.

Fall/Winter took a richer, more dramatic turn. Lagerfeld leaned into the codes of bourgeois chic, layering textures and tones with a confident hand. Velvets, golds, deep crimsons, and dark navies dominated the palette, bringing gravity and grandeur to Chanel’s cold-weather silhouettes. The tailoring was impeccable—structured wool coats, high-collared blouses, and sharply cut skirts—offset by lavish accessories and moody romance. The signature camellia motif reappeared as brooches and embroidery, adding softness to otherwise commanding ensembles.

Taken together, these two seasons reflect Lagerfeld’s dynamic ability to shift moods without losing coherence. 1992 was a year when Chanel didn’t just nod to its history. It fully inhabited it, reworking the codes of Coco with a theatrical, editorial flourish. The items selected for this curation, ranging from rare logo jewelry to runway-worn outerwear, speak to a house in full command of its image and influence.

This curation invites you to witness how Chanel in 1992 walked the tightrope between fantasy and function, tradition and trend. In doing so, it helped define what the Chanel woman could be: soft, strong, and always ahead of her time.

Lagerfeld’s work in 1992 showcased his masterful command of duality, balancing softness with strength, nostalgia with modernity. Across both seasons, he reimagined Chanel’s heritage with a theatrical edge, creating collections that were rich in texture, mood, and meaning. The result was a year that reinforced Chanel’s authority in high fashion while offering a bold, romantic vision that continues to inspire today.

The Third Curation: The 1991 Hip-Hop Collection

For our third curation, we turn to one of the most visually iconic and stylistically distinctive moments in the Chanel archive: the 1991 Fall/Winter Ready-to-Wear collection. Known for its bold graphics, oversized silhouettes, and heavy gold embellishments, this collection marked a dramatic shift in visual language, an audacious play on power dressing that fused athletic codes with high-fashion ornamentation.

Lagerfeld pushed the boundaries of Chanel’s signature vocabulary, reworking classic elements like quilting, logos, and chains into something louder, more commanding. Tracksuit-inspired silhouettes, bomber jackets, and voluminous outerwear were layered with layers of gold: rope chains, medallion belts, chunky cuffs, and oversized CC earrings. The styling was maximalist, deliberate, and fiercely opulent.

Color blocked windbreakers, leather baseball caps, and bold typography stood in sharp contrast to the house’s refined heritage, while still rooted in its DNA: pearls, tweed, and camellias reappeared in unexpected forms, woven into pieces that were as much statement as they were satire. The overall effect was a collection that reveled in visual contradiction, turning high fashion into a spectacle of attitude and assertion.

Our curation includes several of the most rare and collectible items from this season—logo-heavy accessories, runway knits, and sculptural outerwear—each piece carefully chosen for its enduring impact and rarity in the vintage market. These items reflect a moment when Lagerfeld challenged the boundaries of the brand’s identity, creating a collection that continues to be referenced, reinterpreted, and remembered more than three decades later.

Chanel’s Fall/Winter 1991 Hip-Hop Collection was a bold departure. Vibrant, theatrical, and unafraid to provoke. Lagerfeld transformed the runway into a stage of excess and expression, crafting a collection that remains one of the house’s most visually iconic and culturally referenced to this day.
